How to Prepare for your Newborn Photo Session | Round Rock and Austin Newborn Photographer

There’s nothing like the first few days of your baby being born!

Snuggling into this new life you created. So much love! I remember those days well!

The newborn stage is fleeting (although it feels endless at the time!). Babies grow up so quickly! Next thing you know they’ll be talking and walking, and you’ll think ‘where did the time go?!’ But during the endless diaper changes, sleepless nights, non-stop feedings, it can be a bit overwhelming.

Capturing your baby during their newborn stage is something every parent should do! You want to remember how tiny your baby was, and how much they changed as they grew up.

I recommend having your newborn photographed before they are 14 days old. I know it can be hard to even think of a newborn photo shoot that early, but I have some great tips for you to help you prepare for your in home lifestyle newborn photo session.

How to Prepare your Baby

Try to have your baby well fed and diaper changed before the photo session. If you can get them to fall asleep 5-10 minutes before my arrival, it’s ideal. Having them asleep before I arrive ensures they are sleeping heavily for their photo session. This way it is easier to move them around without waking them up.

How to Prepare your House

I suggest cleaning up as though you have guests coming over. Your house doesn’t have to be immaculate nor do I ever expect it to be. Just a general pick up of items is good. I photograph a lot of my newborns in their nurseries, the living area, and the master bedroom, so you don’t even need to worry about the whole house! Make sure your house is warm. I’ll be photographing your baby without clothes at times, so the house needs to be extra warm. You might be hot for a small amount of time, but your newborn will be toasty warm and happy.

What to Dress your Baby

I suggest something simple like a white onesie or just a diaper. I also bring a white swaddle with me to keep your baby swaddled and warm. I believe in simple newborn photos without the fancy clothing. Hair bows are always welcome.

Mention Special Items or Heirlooms you’d like to include

Have a family heirloom you want included in your newborn session? Please tell me! I want to know because I want to include it! Special items and heirlooms are unique to you and your family, and I want to make sure I include those items in your photos, so you have the memory too!

Parents be Prepared to get in the Picture

I strongly believe in including parents in a newborn session. This is a special time for Moms and Dads, and I want to capture it! Worried about wardrobe? Just ask! Something simple and neutral always works best, but I’m happy to answer any questions you may have about what to wear.

Siblings are always welcome!

Whether it’s a toddler, tween, or teen, I want them to be included in your newborn session as well! They’re now and big brother or big sister, and it’s special to capture that connection with my camera. A sibling bond is like no other.

Relax and Have Fun!

Having a newborn is stressful enough! I’m happy to tell you exactly what to do to create a fun and relaxed atmosphere.
