How to Prepare for your Family Photo Session | Round Rock and Austin Family Photographer

Family photos can be stressful on everyone.

From trying to choose outfits to getting everyone excited about having their photo taken, it’s not always easy.

I have a few tips to help prepare your family for their family photo session.

  1. Make sure everyone’s clothing is comfortable.
One of the worst things you can do is put a child or even an adult in clothing they don’t feel comfortable in. The unease will show up in the photos in some way, shape or form. Make sure everyone is comfortable in their clothing.

  2. Don’t worry about your kids smiling.
Some of my favorite photos of my own children are when they aren’t smiling. In fact, I have two photos framed and hung on my walls of two crying. Why? Because that’s who they were at the time. Don’t try to force a smile out of your children. You don’t want the forced cheesy smile. It’s my job to coax a genuine smile out of everyone. And I can definitely do it.

  3. Bribery can be a good thing.
If you have little ones, don’t underestimate the genuineness of bribing your kids with something small. I’ve had parents bring candy. I’ve brought bubbles. I’ve had parents promise small treats or an ice cream after a session. You’d be surprised what kids will do if they really want something.

  4. Relax!
Don’t sweat the small stuff. I’ve seen and photographed a lot of families and children, both young and old. I’ve seen a lot. If your children' won’t cooperate with something I’ve asked them to do, don’t worry about it. I work well on the fly, and I always have a plan on my mind even if you think the session is going into disaster mode. Please have confidence in me, and I’ll make sure to get your families beautiful photos of this point and time in your lives.
