What is the best age to photograph babies?

My best friend texted me yesterday asking me a simple question of what is the best age to photograph her daughter. First of all, her daughter is adorable, like every baby, so any age is a good age.

But…

There are certain ages that work best for babies to be photographed, and those are milestones months.

Milestone months for babies are

  • Newborn

  • 3 months old

  • 6 months old

  • 9 months old

  • 1 year old

Each of these represents a different stage in their first year of life. Newborns are wonderfully cuddly and beautiful. It’s a special stage of new life and new beginnings. Best time to photograph newborns is within the first 10 days of birth.

3 month old babies are more alert with their eyes open, looking around, and starting to understand what is going on all around them. The baby’s personality are starting to show.

6 month old babies are usually sitting up and playing with toys actively. Babies will hold items (and probably throw them). And their personalities are definitely alive and well. This is a fun age to photograph!

9 month old babies are usually crawling and moving around. Babies are definitely interacting with Mom/Dad and other family members. They love to play!

1 year old babies are finally one! It’s their milestone birthday which definitely deserves a celebratory photo session! Some one year old babies are walking. Each has their own personality which really shines through. Smash cake sessions are fun to photograph because it really captures if the one year old is shy or adventurous.

So there you have it!

Now there is some give and take for each milestone month. If you wait a month, it’s no biggie! Photographing babies is a fun adventure for me, as your photographer, you, and your baby! We’ll have fun, play around, capture smiles, and their little personality!
