Choosing the best location for your family photo session | Austin and Round Rock Family Photographer

Location, location, location!

Choosing the right location for you photo session can help capture you and your family at their best!

But choosing the wrong location will definitely put a damper on your memories.

A lot of my clients trust me to choose a location for their family portrait session. And I have several locations I use on a regular basis because I know they will photograph really well. Especially if I’m able to photograph then during a certain time of day.

What do I look for when I go location scouting?

  1. Variety
A location has to offer me a variety of backgrounds and scenes. I need to be able to put a story together in my mind of how I would walk clients through a family photo session. This allows me to have their portrait session flow smoothly, and it gives them a variety of different options when choosing from their gallery.

  2. Good light depending on the time of day
The definition of photography is the art of producing an image by capturing light on a light sensitive surface. Good light can make or break your photographs. When looking at different locations, I see how the light will be shining at certain times of day. If I’m shooting mid-day, I want a location to provide me with some shade so the light is not as harsh on my clients. If I’m shooting at golden hour, I want a location which will provide me with beautiful backlight to enhance my client’s photo session.

  3. Having the location reflect my Client’s personality
Each one of my client’s are different, and I always try to treat each as uniquely as they are. Some clients love the traditional outdoor, greenery, park locations. They want lush fields and beautiful trees. Other clients prefer water, lakes, and creeks. Still others love a good urban, downtown vibe. It’s important to me to make sure my clients know they have options and figure out what works best for them.

I love it when clients come to me with their own idea of where to have their family photo session! I had one client want her portrait session at the graffiti park which used to be located in downtown Austin. I had another want her maternity portraits taken out in Krause Springs. I’m pretty open to photograph clients wherever their hearts taken them!

My whole point is location is are just as important to a photo session as choosing the correct wardrobe. Talk to your photographer about what kind of location you want and what your family likes. Your photographer should help you choose the right location that fits you and your family!
