Focus on Kindness

No act of kindness is ever wasted. - Aesop
Be the reason someone believes in the goodness of people. ~ Karen Salmonsohn
Kindness is a language the deaf can hear and the blind can see. - Mark Twain
Kindness begins with me.

Today I took my kids over to Pflugerville Lake.  They love throwing rocks in the water.  We happen to stop at a section where there was a group of ducks.  Cassidy and Sawyer loved being around the ducks, watching they swim in the water, and waddle around.  Unfortunately, I was not prepared for ducks, so I didn't bring anything for them to eat.

After a bit, a gentleman comes up to us with a half a loaf of bread and asks me if my kids would like to feed the ducks.  He told me he comes everyday to feed the ducks, but he saw my kids watching the ducks and wanted to give them the opportunity to feed them.

That's a small act of kindness I won't be forgetting.  He didn't have to give his bread to my kids, but he chose to do it.

A few weeks ago, parts of Louisiana were hammered by rain.  Baton Rouge, Denham Springs, East Baton Rouge Parish, and Livingston Parish (just to name a few) were historically flooded.

The news did not cover the story and historical flood the way they should have.  National attention was not brought on all these people who were devastated by flooded houses.  I-12 and I-10 were shut down for days because of flooding.  People were trapped on highways, houses, supermarkets.  Too many people had to be rescued to count because they went to bed Saturday night with it raining and woke up Sunday to find water already in their houses.

My husband's uncle and cousin's houses were flooded with anywhere between 18 inches to 6 feet of water.  And some didn't even live in a 500 year flood plain.  We also had friends and their families directly affected losing most if not all of their possessions.

And the devastating fact is, a lot of these people did not have flood insurance because they did not live in a flood plain.  For those of you unaware, if you do not have flood insurance, regular house insurance does not cover any flood damage.  Therefore, these people do not have any means to rebuild and replace their homes other than their own bank accounts or charitable donations.

A fellow photographer and friend of mine had a house that was flooded from Hurricane Sandy.  When she heard of the flooding then heard my first hand stories, she wanted to help these people because she knows exactly what they are going through.

She gathered a group of photographers together who are willing to donate their time for a donation to the United Way relief fund for flood victims.
